Reading CCASS: what your shareholder register is telling you

31 October 2026·2 min read

Most shares in a Hong Kong-listed company are not registered in investors' own names. They sit in the Central Clearing and Settlement System (CCASS), held through banks, brokers and custodians that act for the investors behind them. For an IR team, that creates a blind spot: the register shows the intermediaries, not the investors.

The CCASS shareholding data published on HKEXnews narrows that gap. For any date, it lists each CCASS participant and the number of shares it holds for clients. On its own, one day's data says little. Compared week on week, it starts to show movement.

What to look for

*Large net changes.* A custodian bank that adds a meaningful position over several weeks often reflects institutional buying. A steady reduction at the same participant can signal an investor leaving.

*Concentration.* How much of the free float sits with the ten largest participants, and whether that share is rising or falling.

*Broker versus custodian.* Movements at retail brokers and at global custodian banks usually reflect different types of investor. Reading them separately avoids mixing retail trading with institutional positioning.

*Timing.* Changes around results, placements, index reviews or news flow are easier to interpret than changes in a quiet week.

From data to action

CCASS shows the intermediary, not the investor. When a movement matters, a listed company can ask intermediaries to disclose the persons interested in its shares under section 329 of the Securities and Futures Ordinance. Combined with Part XV disclosures from substantial shareholders, this can turn an anonymous custodian position into a named investor.

The practical result is a better outreach list: investors who are adding to be briefed and supported, investors who are reducing to be understood, and peers' shareholders who are not yet on your register.

Tyche's Shareholder Analysis turns this process into a weekly report, with a running history and IR recommendations, as an add-on to our IR retainer services.
